If someone gets hurt
Team leader — do these seven things before you go home.
-
Look after them firstFirst aid. Everything else can wait a few minutes.
-
Stop. Don't tidy upTurn the machine off and take the key. Leave everything where it is. Only move something if it could hurt someone else.
-
Ring the office nowNot tonight. Not Friday. Keep ringing until someone picks up. A text is not a phone call.
-
Ask where they got treatedHospital, a doctor, or nothing? See the green box below — the office needs this today.
-
Put it in the safety app todayEvery time. Even small ones. Even if they say they're fine. Even if nobody misses an hour.
-
Write down who saw itNames. What they were doing. Which machine, and who was driving it. Take photos if it's safe.
-
Tag the machine outIf a machine was involved, lock it off and log the fault. Don't tick "safe to operate" in the morning.
“Did the hospital keep them in — or did they get seen and sent home?”
Some injuries have to be reported to WorkSafe and some don't. The office works that out — you just get them the facts. Being kept in is different from being seen and sent home. A doctor or physio visit is different again.
“Went to hospital” is not enough. Get the real answer and tell the office. If you can't find out, tell them you couldn't — don't leave it blank and don't guess.
Not sure if it needs reporting? Ring and ask. Asking costs nothing. The office makes that call — you just get them the facts.
The two things that go wrong here are an injury logged a week late and the treatment left blank. Both take a legal deadline off the office before they know there is one. If you only remember one thing on this page, remember step 5.
Summary only — not the law. The office holds the full procedure.
